I seriously don't get it. I grew up on GD tour and it was a very peaceful and loving place. We had such a great scene (until the 90's). What do you think Jerry would say if he saw all the crap that goes on here? I hope that things get better here because I would love to stick around and share stories and music with you. I know that some people get off on starting shit. You'll get that anywhere, but wouldn't you rather go through life being happy? I'm the guy who holds doors open for people and lets cars pass in front of them. That is why I share the music with everyone. It's a positive thing to do. I know that I'll never be able to change this place, that is not my intentions, but it would be nice if there was just a little bit less fighting. I am 100% for freedom of speech, but what does verbally attacking someone have to do with The Grateful Dead?

Try keeping it kind, even for just a day. See how it feels. You might like it :)

Peace and Love....

A very good question Charlie ...

Once upon a time there was a frog who lived by the bank of a very fast flowing river.
One day she met a scorpion who asked her if she would swim to the other side of the river and carry him on her back across to the other side because he could not swim. "Not likely !" said the frog, "You'll sting me to death no doubt!". "Of course I wouldn't." replied the scorpion, "I can't swim, so if I stung you we'd both die in the river. Besides, I really need to get over there. I promise I won't sting you, honestly."

The frog thought about it for a while. Then she said; "OK if you put it like that, I trust you." The scorpion climbed onto the frog's back and the frog got into the water.
"See, I would be very stupid to risk drowning" said the scorpion.
All went well until halfway across the river the scorpion stung the frog. As they both slipped under the water, the frog with her last dying gasp, asked: "Why did you do that ? You promised you wouldn't, besides you will die too."

"I can't help it". The scorpion replied. "It's part of my nature".

Heard the story of identical twins...one the eternal optimist, the other the everlasting pessimist. After consulting a psychologist, the parents came up with a plan to at least bring them both closer to a middle point.

The pessimist was locked in a room for four hours. The room contained all his favorite foods, brand new toys, everything good in life. After four hours had passed, the parents went in. The child was sitting in the middle of the room, the food uneaten, ice cream melted, the toys still in their boxes and he was crying as well. When they asked him why he didn't eat the food or play with the toys, he responded in a sorrowful voice, "I was afraid that the food would give me a stomach ache so I didn't eat. I knew that if I played with the toys they would just break!" Well, the parents were more hopeful for the optimistic twin.

You see, they had locked him in a room filled with nothing but horseshit for four hours. They figured that he would at least see that not everything in the world is great. When they opened the door they saw him digging through the dung with both hands and a big smile on his face. When they asked him what he was doing, he said,"With all this horse poop I figure there's got to be a pony somewhere!"

Sometimes you just have to dig through all the horseshit to find that pony...

Charlie, I always had a set of rules I brought to this site and that was every post I made would have at least 1 Link to a show or a song or a lyric - Its all about the music and we are just here to share our experiences with the music - I love hearing about what people went through to get to a show, the road trips involved, but always it was about the Grateful Dead. I love the reviews of certain folks like Liamfinnigan (gone overboard as well) Cliff, and Dr. Flashback. I respect their words and follow their links to other shows. Its because of them (and you) I am able to listen to so many different shows. So please, stay on board because your work here is like a light in very dark places as even Samwise understood...

Assuming you meant it, did you have fun? I was hoping for something from the 70s, but 3/29/87 worked too.

Hey--so "that" is what they do, right? They pick a show and "do it" in their style or some such? That's what I've picked up from postings here without looking into it at all...

So, did it work WELL for ya? Just curious...seems a lot of folks actually like them better than the more "DEAD" related bands/partial bands/etc. of late...

I'm not going to choose which band I like best (dso v. furthur), but I will say that everyone in DSO sings remarkably well. and the crowds and venues are smaller, which is always nice.

Okay.

Tolkien references....

Once is a data point in isolation. You can't even calculate slope.

Twice could still be coincidence, but now you can calculate slope, but not R squared.

Four times????? Not coincidence. A handful more and we have statistical significance.

Just how many Dead fans are also Tolkien fans and is there a causal or deterministic relationship?

Yes - I read Tolkien in the late 60s, and twice again. (The films were tremendous.) I can see a very strong connection here. Hunter's poetry is descended from similar lineage. Tolkien's themes of heroism in the common man have universal appeal, but it's the storytelling similarities - think of Terrapin suite, or Mountains of the Moon. A deeply shared characteristic is the poetry, music and love of legend running through all the books, not to mention the tremendous detail and history... All of us love to delve into GD history, recall legendary shows and epic nights, the sounds of music wafting thru the air over smoky campgrounds...

My 7th grade English teacher was a Tolkien freak (1966) and I loved reading. She had knobby knees from surfing in the waters on the SF peninsula, long before it was acceptable to be a surfer chick in San Francisco.

I read the Hobbit and then naturally fell right into the rest, which I have read and reread on a regular basis.

Now that I reread my first paragraph, she could have been my first teacher crush!

Hey Charlie, I'm kind of with what Rob said. Would like to see you stay around. Truthfully I don't think it's us guys, I think it's a couple, mainly one, troll with different handles that come here to stir things up. As for the peace thing - I'd rather keep it real and have people say it like they feel it rather than be phoney. And I've never seen Jerry as a peace and love guy, from all reports he had a pretty sharp tongue and could be pretty damn moody. In addition to being a phenominal guy that everyone wanted to be around. I'll bet anything that's why Miles Davis loved him, just as much or more than for the music. Ooops tangent again

Long story short - thanks for all your contributions, hope you stay ( I have a ton of things I'd like to ask you ), most of the regulars here do get along or can keep it civil most of the time. I think you'll see when the shit gets started and you click on that posters name you will see only a couple of posts ( new name ) or that that person ALWAYS is starting trouble

oh one more thing - your attitude about sharing music ROCKS! Do you remember what it used to be like trading, and how some people were complete snobs and stingy about sharing?

no it's not silly it's true. But hey, it's good to be modest rather than arrogant. But there are a million of us that are Grateful ( no pun intended ) for all the shows you've shared.

I share you're excitement about Steve. First heard about him when Cippolina was still in Zero in the mid 80's and have been a fan ever since. It's a damn shame ( imo ) that he's not playing with the band. I know he's got his own thing in his own right but he's the only one that can take me there other than GD.

I guess one that does get discussed a bit is what happened with him and Phil? Lots of rumors out there. I understand if you can't share. But there is a group of us that think that it should be Steve up on that stage with Dead, Furthur, etc. If you can't share, that is fine, don't want to air dirty laundry.

2nd would be why didn't SKB work out longer, I think that was the his best band. Probably lots of $, I know you all toured a lot and came to places like here, Spokane that didn't have much of a turnout. My wife kept telling me to watch that amazing drummer (Rodney). Also enjoyed having another guitar with him.

If you ever get up in this area again I would be happy to help spread the word and get a turnout.

Maybe that's it. A Pavlovian response to the sound. Street cats in one ear, a Donna-esque PITB in the other other: Sometimes, folks just can't help jumping in and yowling along. And when they're Phuddish as well, they yowl in lengthy detail and step on each others' footnotes and never, ever back down :-)

5. They all need more shows.
6. Too much 90's Dead
7. They don't listen to enough Steve Kimock.
8.. They took the bad acid at Woodstock, or thought they did, or wish they did, or dreamed about it or heard about it from someone.

But the combination of the work you've been doing with upgrades to existing sources and learning a few things about the intricacies of this site brought me back. I think I've developed more of a sense of humor about the bullshit here, and however compelled I am to read everything posted regardless of how inane it is, I try not to let any of it really get to me. Fighting? It's more like dumb monkeys slinging poo.

I always wear a poncho. Once you figure out who the monkeys are, it's pretty easy to dodge the feces.

A little ranting and friendly abuse is part of the fun. I think most of us agree that for the good of this place we keep it wild. After all, trolls.....trolls will keep us together. Their act almost always back-fires here because the regulars and the hacks(like me)rally for the cause.

Forum: GratefulDead Subject: Re: Why do you guys fight so much?

Hey Charlie--that's the $64 question, eh? We have been talking about it for the five yrs or so I've been coming around.

First, the "trolls" are one thing; ie, those that arrive to stir up matters, even if they, ironically, like the DEAD. [BTW we "early era" types with some smugness note that the trolls generally prefer the 80s & 90s...hmmm, anyone else notice this?] They just need to be ignored, but it's hard to keep to that tactic. We try.

Second, the regulars that seem to fight are just that; CLIFF, by his own admission, "likes to push buttons". But, in general, his kind-hearted nature shows through on many occasions. Likewise, Rob might seem a bit touchy at times, but for anyone that's been around long enough, they know there's a heart of gold under that gruff exterior (and a damn find writer too!).

So, much of what passes for "fighting" is in fact mostly humor, mis-understandings, old friends working out differences, etc. EG, any number of folks have mistaken exchanges between myself and Rob as "fights" when it's nothing more than a classic "discussion" one might find in one's own home...we have strong wills, opinions, views, etc., and we are easily frustrated when others mis-understand, or worse, at least in my case, don't realize how absolutely indefensible a view other than the one I espouse, really is (har, but true to a point). I have eventually become "friends" when many a poster that our first 10 exchanges would've been classified as dog-fights (NC, BD2, ClCity, etc., etc., etc.). Dire doesn't really count cause he's just a bottom dwelling butt munch.

So, IMHO, there is much less "real fighting" here than meets the eye, trolls aside. And it clearly is something we enjoy, or the regulars wouldn't have been here so long and so consistently.

My Irish ancestors fought like cats and dogs but I wouldn't have missed those family gatherings for the world.

Yeah, we are somewhat of a dysfunctional family 'round here, but most of us mean nothing but the best. Just like in the parking lot of old there were mostly good natured people who were kind and generous. There were really no strangers back then. But there were always a few Buzz Killingtons scattered about, even way back when. And the same holds true here. The majority of these folks here come to share stories, knowledge and engage in good natured ribbing along the way. Yes the negative ones sometimes garner too much attention, but such is life. We always seem to weather these storms and quickly get back on track. Like you and others have said all along: the music is what keeps us coming back.

3 shows for the tweeking heads under the sky,
7 for the taper lords in their hall of stoners,
9 for local narcs doomed to die,
1 for the Fat Man on his dark throne.
In the land of the Parking Lot where the hacky sacks fly,
One show to rule them all, one show to find them,
One show to bring them all and in the arena bind them
In the land of the Parking Lot where the hacky sacks fly.

Hello Charlie,

I'm glad that you've decided to hang out here at least for a while. And while I'm here, thank for your generosity in sharing shows with us. 03-16-68 at the Carousel a little while back was a work of some artistry.

Anyway, to the point. Any place with an open door policy is, as you say, going to have people who just like to start shit wandering in to the premises. That's not going to change. As I've suggested in the past the best way to deal with these miscreants is to ignore them, though I appreciate that being an abrasive, cantankerous old bastard I sometimes fail to follow that advice.

I have to say that I enjoy an argument - I like the give and take - but I draw the line at attacking the person rather than what they're saying. That's no way to win anyone round and there is far too much of that ad hominem nonsense going on around here. It's just lazy thinking. There are plenty here like Tell, elbow, JOTS and bluedevil who'll give you a good going discussion without lapsing into abusiveness.

I'm not big on peace and love, and I don't waste a lot of time wondering what Jerry would do, I reckon he was as likely to be an asshole from time to time as any other living breathing human being. But, like you, I hold doors open for people. I was raised to say please and thank you and to be polite and considerate. I do expect, however, to get a little consideration in turn. Unlike my Christian brothers here gathered, I am disinclined to turn the other cheek.

Anyway, stick around if you're so inclined, Charlie. We're not all knuckle-dragging, blinkered layabouts struggling to grind axes while keeping the chips balanced on our shoulders.

Oh yeah, 72 NYE - that's a peach. Many thanks.

Best to you,

That's puzzling . You defer in an older thread directly questioning my post to you , then refer to me in another thread . I believe , as you have written of others , you assume I read every post . Au contaire .
Maybe a genuine attempt to reach someone who is troubled , using there own claims , is somehow misguided ? I wonder if such attempts are foolish and those that are obviously troubled , who find their way into our midst , ought to be mocked and derided ? Is that the one note ? A slide back to social Darwinism ? Ridicule and throw away those who are unpleasant and difficult , but clearly unbalanced . Maybe those 18th century folks were correct , much like the ending scene in Amadeus . Box 'em up and whip them .
Some can't find there way home , and maybe an attempt at a speck of compassion will help them ( instead of reacting like Pavlov's dog ) .
Some just want to destroy , then I would say let slip the dogs of war .
That would be not be turning the other cheek .

No idea what you find so puzzling; I don't believe I could have expressed myself more clearly. I have, of course, no idea which posts you read (Tell took umbrage at my suggestion that he read them all) and only assume you read posts of mine that are directly addressed to you.

If you wish to extend a hand of kindness to someone who may, and I only suggest may, be actually extremely untroubled by the very deliberate stance they take, albeit that that stance is one you find offensive, then that is perhaps to your credit. However, I see no reason at all for your leap to judgment in declaring said person to be mentally unbalanced simply because what they say is distasteful to you. That kind of thing is hardly better than the name calling you deride; it's a position that won't win you any arguments.

I really don't see how anything I've said could be seen as promoting Social Darwinism; I find that suggestion puzzling. As to Pavlov's dog - I agree that a little less knee jerk and a little more critical thinking would be no bad thing around here.

Oh yeah--I did! Uh-oh...this probably proves your point, eh? Reading them all...

I was having a bad night; very bad night. Suppose though that I was cranky about it because of the grain of truth, or at least my assumption that it was demeaning to reveal the truth about me as in "how lame could I be" and of course the answer is "exactly that lame" (whoaa...what a great pun there--at least for those that know why it was a bad night, huh?) to read all the posts all the time.

But, for my part, and yours--that was all patched up and settled quickly, as they always are for old regulars (IMHO).

I directly addressed this person on their mental state . Also , how they reconcile their spiritual claim with Luke 6:42 versus their actions . I demanded respect in our conversation and did not receive cap lock or profanity in return . If I was leaping to any judgments , I am still awaiting a response from that person . As every single one of the posts to them was manically answered that day , mine was left and still is unanswered . If someone questioned me in such a manner I would respond and maybe need to reevaluate . I would not run or let it pass . And has that poster ever let anything pass ?
Name calling leads to nothing . The same with winning arguments over this issue . I do not have any interest .
It did seem like a pack of dogs , quickly attacking this person at will . Ratcheting up the volume for kicks . And then the nonsensical return posts . Really I ask of you , would you treat someone in your life like this ? That write and perseverate the way they do . And that's all we know about them ... Or would you say hello , try to find their name out , ask if they have eaten lately or call the authorities if needed ?
Yes , I know are scene quite well . I am part of it . The witty repartee . The social structure of our forum . The joy and knowledge I have been given and hopefully shared . And then these black days .
If our community desires to stand on ground apart , in order to let are own individuality be expressed freely , and then we treat those less able then ourselves as we have this past week ? What is the difference ? Why bother ? Do we not , in our able capacities , have some obligation to others with are freedom of speech ?
However , if someone comes to destroy , you can find me in the front ranks . Just read my reviews .

I don't chime in much around here but I do enjoy the conversations and info shared. When I start seeing the sort of attacks that have been flying around here recently all I do is stay away for a couple of days.

Charlie Miller:

"I seriously don't get it. I grew up on GD tour and it was a very peaceful and loving place. We had such a great scene (until the 90's). What do you think Jerry would say if he saw all the crap that goes on here? I hope that things get better here because I would love to stick around and share stories and music with you. I know that some people get off on starting shit."

Which is why I avoid "trolls" like Islam-Sucks and his diatribes. There other sites for political fights and pissing contests...

Dear Charlie Miller,

I hope that you have some idea of how much happiness your contributions to IA bring to thousands of people who, like me, stay anonymous except for the occasional 'review' of a 5-star show that is too fantastic to not express our admiration for the band or your transfer. Loosing you from IA would feel like a death in my family.

Thank you...for a real good time!

First of all I love Henry Rollins mind, he will definitely make you use your mind if you see any of the shows he did on IFC, I think it was.

I have to mention to Charlie that I apologize for getting offended and didn't realize "Islam" was Tito and had to express my anger at his "BS " comments. I've been a "hippie" since I was 6 wearing tye-dies and beads to catholic school in 67' I got from my older sister who was in college at Northwestern. Even though I believe in "peace and Love", I don't think we can really have those things with out "justice" and "equal rights'(ty Peter Tosh*S*).

If we don't stand up and speak up against ignorant abuse we will live in delusion on the River Denial.
